High Adventure Program

Simply, it is our belief (and experience) that boys will stay with the Scouting program longer when the outings are more adventurous.  Especially as boys grow older, scouting can take a back burner to driving, dating, and all the other demands (and distractions!) high school boys face.

As a result, our Troop has an incredible high adventure program which includes backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, snowboarding, kayaking....whew!

To participate, certification programs are required under careful, expert adult supervision.  We are lucky to have several ASM's who are passionate about backpacking and similar programs and they are eager to teach our Scouts.

We do not rush new scouts into these programs.  Often we will have a weekend camping trip that offers two treks at the same destination. One trek will be for backpackers.  One trek will be for tent campers.

We recommend that you do not purchase gear until down the road if your scout develops an interest in these trips.

Philmont

philmont badgePhilmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America's premier high-adventure base, challenges Scouts and Venturers with more than 200 square miles of rugged New Mexico wilderness. Backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs offer young people many ways to experience this legendary country.

While we do have Philmont scheduled for this year, we have attended several times. For more information on Philmont and the requirements to be able to attend, see B.S.A.'s information page.
